Walking Without Seeing the Whole Path

I like knowing what is next. In fact, not knowing really stresses me out. I like calendars, checklists, and having at least a rough idea of what's coming next. There is something comforting about seeing the whole picture before taking the first step. But following Jesus has rarely worked that way.
I think if we're honest, most of us would love for God to hand us a blueprint. We want to know where we're going, how long it will take, what obstacles we'll face, and whether everything will work out in the end. Instead, God often gives us something much smaller. A next step.
One of my favorite examples of this is Abraham. In Genesis 12, God tells Abraham to leave his country, his people, and his father's household and go to the land He would show him. I have always found that wording interesting. God didn't hand Abraham a map.
He didn't explain every stop along the journey or tell him exactly how everything would unfold. He simply said, "Go."
Can you imagine how many questions Abraham must have had? Where exactly am I going? How long will it take? What will happen when I get there? How will You fulfill the promises You've made?
Scripture doesn't tell us that Abraham got all of those answers before he left. It tells us he obeyed. I don't know about you, but that's challenging. Because I usually want understanding before obedience. I want clarity before commitment. I want certainty before I take the first step. But over and over again, Scripture shows us that God often works in the opposite order.
That pattern didn't stop with Abraham. Think about the Israelites as they wandered through the wilderness. God could have handed them everything they needed for the entire journey, but He didn't. Instead, the Israelites were told to take enough manna for that day. Not next week. Not next month. Just enough for today. This was an important lesson for the Israelites to learn that the Lord will always provide for them day after day. Each new morning became another reminder that their security wasn't found in storing up enough for themselves, but in Jehovah Jireh.
When I look at my life I know He still works that way with us. Most of the time we want God to hand us the entire roadmap. Instead, He gives us enough grace for today.
Enough wisdom for today's decision, strength for today's challenge, or peace for today's uncertainty. This is because He is inviting us into a relationship that requires daily dependence. The Israelites didn't see the Jordan River part until they stepped into it. Peter didn't know what would happen when he climbed out of the boat. Even throughout my own life, I've realized that God has rarely shown me the entire picture. There have been seasons where I desperately wanted to know what was coming next. I wanted guarantees. I wanted details. I wanted confirmation that everything would make sense in the end. Instead, God simply asked me to trust Him with the next step. I've also noticed that God provides more than what we physically need. Sometimes He brings exactly the right people into our lives for a particular season. They encourage us, challenge us, walk beside us, and remind us that we're not alone. Then sometimes those seasons change, people move, friendships fade, or our callings change. That can be painful, but it doesn't always mean something has gone wrong. Sometimes it is just that God is getting us ready for a new season and sometimes He allows us to walk through quieter seasons because He wants us to discover that His presence is enough before anyone else's.
Looking back, I can see His faithfulness in both. The people He brought and the moments when it was just Him and me. I have learned to be grateful for it all. The reality is, that if He had shown me every twist, every challenge, and every blessing ahead of time, I probably would have been hyperfucused on the plan instead of the One leading me. That's the invitation God gives all of us. Not to see the whole path, but to trust the One who already does.
Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
We know this isn't a guarantee that we'll always understand the path, but this verse reminds us to trust the One leading us on it. Sometimes I think we miss that. We spend so much energy asking God to show us what's next that we forget He has already promised us something even better. His presence.
Following Jesus has never been about collecting enough information to feel comfortable. It's about learning that His character is trustworthy, even when the future isn't visible. Maybe that's exactly where you are today. Waiting for clarity or certainty. What if God isn't asking you to see the next five years? What if He just wants you to take the next step forward in faith? Because throughout Scripture, God rarely revealed the whole journey, but He never stopped walking with His people and that's still true today.
Just as He provided daily bread in the wilderness, He still faithfully provides His presence, His wisdom, and His grace for each new step.
