For years, my life was wrapped in the beautiful, exhausting swirl of early motherhood. The diapers, playdates, snacks, storybooks, and endless questions. My days were filled with noise, laughter, and little hands always needing mine. In many ways, those years were my offering, poured out daily, sometimes hourly, in love, service, and sacrifice.
But now, the house is quiet.
For the first time, all my kids are in school. And while I always imagined I’d be cheering at the finish line of those preschool years, the silence hit differently. The shift was subtle and seismic all at once. I began asking a question I hadn’t considered in a long time:
Now what, Lord?
The Bible tells us there is “a season for everything, and a time for every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1) and yet, even knowing that truth, change can still feel unsettling. We pour ourselves into raising children with every ounce of energy and love we have, and then the intensity changes. Our role shifts. The days stretch out in ways they never used to, and for the first time in years, we’re not entirely sure where we fit.
But God knows.He always knows.
When I bring my questions to Him :What is my purpose now? Who am I without the constant demands of motherhood? I sense His gentle whisper:“You are still mine. I still have plans for you.”
The purpose God has for us doesn’t end when our babies grow up. In fact, this quieter season might be exactly the soil He’s been preparing to grow something new. We see this again and again in Scripture. God calling people into new chapters, new identities, and deeper purposes:
Sarah found joy and fulfillment in God’s promise long after she thought her story was written.
Moses was called to lead a nation well after settling into an ordinary life.
Anna the prophetess worshiped in the temple day and night and witnessed the Messiah as an elderly woman.
Lydia used her business and her home to help birth the early church.
God doesn’t stop calling us just because a season ends. He invites us into what’s next.
This season, the one where you have time to breathe, to think, to dream, is not empty. It’s sacred. It’s a time to seek God again with fresh eyes and an open heart. Maybe He’s calling you to something new like a ministry, a job, a passion that’s been dormant, or simply a deeper walk with Him.
This verse has become an anchor for me lately:
“The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.” — Psalm 138:8
What a comfort it is to know that God is not done writing our stories. He is faithful to complete the work He started, even as the shape of our days change.
So if you’re in this in-between season, wondering what comes next, I encourage you to lean in. Open your hands. Ask God what He wants to do with your time, your talents, your heart. He sees you. He hasn’t forgotten you.
You are still called. You are still deeply loved. And this quiet, beautiful, unfamiliar season may just be the beginning of something more meaningful than you ever imagined.
