Looking forward to spring

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12 After months of stillness, of gray skies and quiet branches, the world begins to stir again. The air softens. Light lingers a little longer in the evenings. Buds appear where there was once nothing but bare wood. And slowly creation begins to sing again.

Isaiah paints a picture that feels almost too beautiful to be real. Mountains bursting into song, trees clapping their hands, the earth itself rejoicing, and yet, every spring we are given a glimpse of exactly that.

Joy in this verse is not restrained. It is expansive, overflowing, impossible to contain. It moves outward "you will go out in joy" as if it cannot stay hidden any longer. After seasons of waiting, of wandering, of wintering in our souls, God leads us forward again. Not with urgency, not with pressure, but with peace. Spring reminds us that God does not rush renewal.

He orchestrates it. The trees do not strain to produce leaves. The flowers do not compete to bloom first. Each part of creation responds to its Creator in perfect timing, unfolding exactly as it was designed to. And in that unfolding, there is worship.

Maybe that’s what Isaiah is trying to express to us.

That joy is not something we manufacture, but it’s something we step into.

That peace is not something we chase, but it’s something we are led into.

And that all of creation is already participating in this divine rhythm, responding to God with a kind of effortless praise.

The trees “clap their hands” not because they were told to, but because they were made to move with the wind. The hills “burst into song” not because they have voices, but because their very existence reflects the glory of the One who formed them.

And you? You were made for this too.

To go out in joy, not because everything is perfect, but because God is present.

To be led forth in peace, not because the path is always easy, but because the One leading you is faithful.

Spring is an invitation to believe that what felt dormant is not dead.

To remember that God is always working beneath the surface, even when we cannot see it.

To step outside, literally and spiritually, and notice the quiet miracles happening all around you.

The budding branches. The returning birds. The warmth of the sun on your skin.

All of it is a reminder: God is a God of renewal.

So if your heart has felt like winter: tired, barren, and isolated. Take courage because the same God who teaches the trees to clap and the hills to sing is at work in you too. And when the time is right, you will go out in joy, and it will be full and overflowing just like spring itself.
