The slow season

Life moves fast. Calendars fill up. Deadlines loom. It’s easy to feel like we’re behind, like every moment has to be productive, planned, or purposeful.

And yet, sometimes God invites us into slow seasons. These are stretches of life that feel quiet and maybe even a little… empty. At first, slow seasons can feel strange or even disappointing. We wonder: Am I missing something? Should I be doing something different?

But here’s the thing: slow seasons are not voids. They are sacred spaces. They are times God uses to shape us, to teach us to rest, to notice, to breathe. When we trust His heart, we can trust His pace.

I was reminded of this while listening to a podcast episode by Joyce Meyer. She talked about praying for opportunities to be interrupted. And I thought, interruptions? I hate interruptions. Being in control is something I really wrestle with. But for the next week, I prayed for the Lord to soften my heart and to help me notice and embrace interruptions, rather than resist them. And then it happened. There was a car accident one street away from our home. Two small children were sitting on the sidewalk while the adults spoke with the police. I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me, and I went over to the scene. I handed one of the officers a box of chalk that we had in the garage so the children could color while the adults got things squared away. If I had been too busy, rushing through my day, I would have missed it. I would have missed the chance to do something small and kind, to be part of God’s work in that moment. That interruption reminded me that slow seasons, and even small pauses within our days, can carry sacred opportunities to participate in His kingdom.

When we embrace a slower rhythm, life surprises us in unexpected ways. We notice little joys that might have gone unseen if we were rushing. An unplanned conversation, a spontaneous walk, a moment of laughter that bubbles up out of nowhere. These interruptions, the unplanned sparks of life, often turn out to be some of the most memorable moments.

Trusting God’s pace doesn’t mean doing nothing. It doesn’t mean giving up on goals or growth. It means leaning into the timing He’s giving you, believing that the work happening beneath the surface is not wasted even if it feels invisible right now. There is freedom in this rhythm. There is delight in noticing life’s little interruptions. There is peace in trusting that God’s timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t match ours. So if you’re in a slow season right now, I invite you to lean into it. Notice the quiet. Celebrate the pauses. Give yourself permission to rest. Listen for small joys. And remember: sometimes the most meaningful moments come when life doesn’t follow your agenda, but God’s.
