Hi God, Should I Keep Going?

Have you ever been in the middle of something and thought, "Okay, God. I just need to know if I'm supposed to keep going." Not because you don't care about it or you're ready to quit. You're just tired of wondering whether all this effort is actually leading somewhere.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. There are things I'm working toward that I genuinely believe are worth pursuing. I'm putting in the work. I'm showing up. I'm trying to be faithful with the opportunities in front of me. But sometimes I still wonder if I'm supposed to keep going. Should I be trying harder? What if I am supposed to change directions? Should I wait where I am?

I think we assume that if God wants us to keep going, He'll make everything feel easy.

But that's not really what Scripture shows us. Paul kept preaching when people rejected him.

Noah kept building before there was any evidence of the flood. David kept tending sheep long before he sat on a throne. Faithfulness doesn't always come with immediate confirmation. Sometimes you just keep doing the thing God has already given you to do.

That doesn't mean we should stubbornly keep pursuing something simply because we've already invested time in it. There is a difference between perseverance and refusing to listen when God is redirecting us. That's where discernment comes in. Honestly, even at this point in my life, discernment can be hard.

Sometimes I wish God would just send me an email. "Hi Ashley. Keep doing this. Stop doing that. Here's what's coming next. Love, God."

I would really appreciate the clarity, but He hasn't promised to give me a detailed schedule.

He has promised to give wisdom to those who ask. James 1:5 says that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously. So maybe instead of constantly asking God to tell me the entire plan, I can ask Him for wisdom about the step I'm actually standing in.

"Do I keep going?"

Then listen.

Pray.

Pay attention.

Seek wise counsel.

Look at what Scripture says.

And be willing to obey whether the answer is yes or no.

Faithfulness can look like continuing when there is no applause, no obvious result, and no guarantee that the thing you're working toward will turn out exactly how you imagined. And sometimes faithfulness looks like releasing something you've been working hard to hold onto. Either way, I don't want to be so determined to get where I think I'm going that I stop paying attention to where God is actually leading.

As we navigate this season of "what's next?" my prayer is going to be: "God, give me the wisdom to know whether I should keep going

and the courage to obey You either way." Have you been following along with the Hi God, What's Next? September Journaling Calendar? Download it here!
